Buttery Garlic Texas Toast

If you love bold, buttery flavor and crave that thick, crunchy bite, you’ll fall head over heels for this Buttery Garlic Texas Toast. It’s a side dish that steals the spotlight—crispy, rich, and packed with flavor in every golden slice. Made with fresh garlic, creamy butter, and thick-sliced white bread, this toast is miles better than anything store-bought.

Whether you’re serving it alongside a plate of spaghetti, dunking it into chili, or enjoying it solo as a snack, Texas Toast brings that comforting Southern vibe to your kitchen. You can bake it in the oven or sizzle it on a skillet—either way, it comes out perfectly golden and full of flavor.

Interestingly, Texas Toast first appeared in a Dallas restaurant in the 1940s, born from a happy accident when thick bread didn’t fit in a toaster. They tossed it on the grill instead—and the legend began. So why not bring a little delicious history to your table with this simple, irresistible classic?

Recipe Yield: 6–8 slices

INGREDIENTS

1 loaf thick-cut white bread (Texas Toast style)
8 tbsp unsalted butter, softened
2 tbsp olive oil
4 garlic cloves, finely grated
2 tbsp fresh parsley, finely chopped
½ tsp sea salt
¼ tsp black pepper
¼ tsp garlic powder
¼ tsp onion powder
Optional: ½ cup shredded mozzarella or parmesan

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Preheat and prep:
Preheat oven to 375°F (or heat a large skillet over medium heat if pan-toasting). Line a baking sheet with foil or parchment paper for easy cleanup.

2. Make garlic butter:
In a small bowl, combine softened butter, olive oil, grated garlic, parsley, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder. Mix until well blended into a smooth, spreadable paste.

3. Spread the mixture:
Generously slather one side of each bread slice with the garlic butter mixture. For extra indulgence, flip and lightly spread the other side too.

4. Bake or toast:
For oven: Arrange slices buttered side up on the baking sheet and bake for 10–12 minutes, flipping halfway, until golden and crispy.
For skillet: Place slices buttered side down on hot skillet. Cook for 2–3 minutes per side, until deeply golden and crisp.

5. Optional cheesy twist:
In the last 2 minutes of baking or toasting, sprinkle mozzarella or parmesan over each slice. Allow it to melt before serving.

6. Serve immediately:
Serve warm as a side to pasta, soup, or any main dish—or enjoy as a stand-alone snack.

Helpful Tips to Perfect This Recipe

  • Use Real Garlic: Freshly grated garlic delivers bold, authentic flavor—skip the powdered-only route if you can.
  • Choose the Right Bread: Use bakery-style thick-sliced white bread—at least ¾-inch thick—for that signature Texas Toast bite.
  • Skillet for Extra Crisp: For a crisper, more golden crust, opt for the skillet version and press down slightly while toasting.
